Climbing the Stalk
March 27-April 3
Reception March 31, 5-7pm
The exhibition represents MTSU drawing student’s interpretation and representation of Jack and the Beanstalk. The students were challenged to create their own imagery that could NOT be a trite, cliché, or overused way of depicting their idea. They were encouraged to look at the underlying meaning in the story: such as, people being rewarded for their stupidity, climbing the social ladder, and considering how the story can be culturally relevant today.
The Jack and the Beanstalk project grew out of collaboration between Meghan O’Connor and Dr. Claudia Barnett, professors at Middle Tennessee State University. While art students create 2-dimensional pieces inspired by this theme, screenplay students write and perform a story inspired by the same.

Under the Impression: MTSU Book Arts and Letterpress
Reception April 21, 5-7m
Under the Impression is an exhibition of works created by Book Arts and Letterpress students at MTSU. Most students were first introduced to the media through enrolling in Letterpress or Book Arts classes. Artists included in this exhibition interpret their initial impressions of the medias: the literal impression put on paper by a printing press or being under the impression that a book needs to have a specific form; using new thinking and old technology; collaboration; exploring a non-traditional book structure.
The Middle Tennessee State University Book Arts and Letterpress Program serves to teach a wide variety of book arts medias to students enrolled in the various degree programs offered by the Department of Art as well as interested students in other degree programs. Book Arts courses focus on the physical and theoretical aspects of traditional and contemporary bookbinding, box-making, image-making techniques, papermaking and the use of paper as a creative medium. Letterpress courses introduce printing on the letterpress using a range of old and new technologies. Student projects are designed to creatively explore the use of specific skills within the area, with an emphasis on understanding materials and mastering craft. Concepts are covered using creative exercises, hands-on demos, examples, readings, research projects, library visits and visiting artists. Instructor: Kathleen O’Connell
